Introduction
Deuteronomy 31:6 is a powerful verse of encouragement given to the Israelites as they prepared to enter the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership. Moses speaks these words, commanding the people to be strong and courageous, not because of their own abilities, but because of God’s unwavering presence.
Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.
The Command: Be Strong and Courageous
The repetition of the phrase “be strong and courageous” emphasizes the necessity of bold faith. God does not merely suggest this attitude—He commands it. This courage is not natural but supernatural, rooted in confidence in God’s character and promises.
The Reason: God Goes With You
Moses grounds the command in a specific promise: “Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you.” The presence of God is not distant or passive; it is active and personal. The Hebrew word for “goes with” implies a continuous, accompanying presence. This is the same God who led Israel out of Egypt and through the wilderness.
The Assurance: He Will Not Fail or Forsake
The final clause provides double assurance: God will not fail you (literally, He will not let your hand drop) and He will not forsake you (He will not abandon you). This promise is quoted in the New Testament (Hebrews 13:5) and remains for all believers. Our circumstances may change, but God’s faithfulness never wavers.
Application for Today
When we face fears, uncertainties, or overwhelming challenges, we can recall this verse. The same God who went before Israel goes before us. He calls us to be strong and courageous—not in our own strength, but in the strength He supplies. Let us trust that He will never leave us alone.
